Directions
Champorado is a sweet and chocolatey rice porridge that is popular in the Philippines. It is typically served as a breakfast food or snack and is made by cooking glutinous rice in water with cocoa powder or tablea (a type of chocolate made from roasted and ground cacao beans) and sweetened with sugar.
The dish has its origins in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. The original recipe was a simple mixture of rice and water, but after the introduction of chocolate to the Philippines, the recipe evolved to include the addition of cocoa powder or tablea.
Champorado is often served with evaporated milk, which adds richness and creaminess to the dish. It can also be garnished with a variety of toppings such as sweetened condensed milk, sliced bananas, or toasted rice.
While champorado is traditionally a sweet dish, it can also be served as a savory porridge by omitting the sugar and chocolate and adding salt and other seasonings to taste.
Champorado is enjoyed throughout the Philippines and is a beloved comfort food that is often associated with childhood memories. It is also a popular offering in many Filipino restaurants and cafes, and is enjoyed by both locals and visitors to the country.
Start cleaning the malangkit rice in a big saucepan and cook it with the 2.5 cups of water. Let the rice cook until it’s ready.
The rice shouldn’t stick to the bottom of the saucepan.
When it’s ready, add the sugar, cocoa and vanilla.
Serve it on a nice plate or bowl and on top you can put the milk.
